A Long Time

It has been a very, very long time.
In December I was concentrating on two tasks: getting ready for a road trip to the Southwest with my mother; and finishing the rough draft of a book before I left on the road trip.
My husband, kids and I arrived in St. Louis on Dec. 26th. We did the whole St. Louis thing--my husband and two of the boys went up in the Arch. When they returned to Milwaukee, my mother and I would hit the road.
But things didn't work out quite the way we intended. On Dec. 30 I came down with a fever and chills. I spent the next week doing very little--not even eating some days. I'm still recovering from a hard case of the flu. I lost over 20 pounds, I have a slight cough, and my strength hasn't completely returned.
So the road trip is off. Even if I felt fantastic, there are snow storms in Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico. Even California. This trip was not meant to be.
Every day I get stronger. Soon I'll go back to Milwaukee. My 17-year old needs help filling out FAFSA. I need to tackle the income taxes. And my husband misses my cooking--which is a great milestone because usually he prefers his own cooking to mine. He says he's run out of ideas.
It's good to be missed. And it's nice resting in a quiet house. But I need my family.
My 22 year old came through the flu last week without much trouble. But he's younger and stronger. I'm just glad it's over.
What's that they say? "The best laid plans of mice and men. . ."
