What is the difference between knowledge and wisdom?

Posted on Jul 2nd, 2008 by Jamilah : Creative Thinker Jamilah
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 02, 2008:

I have a graduate degree and throughout the years, of course, I've met others with the same level of education. We have similar vocabularies and analytical approaches. But not everyone with an advanced degree shows good judgment. (Just look at our members of Congress. Many have years of education.)

My mother-in-law never attended formal school. Her family is strong on education so she learned to read and write, but I don't think she ever wrote a research paper and I doubt she ever pontificated on a topic (we spoke different languages, and our communication was halting, so I can't be sure.) Though she lacked in formal education and knowledge, however, she had sound judgment. This I know from experience. When we were in Thailand and I was pregnant, I had some health problems. She didn't hesitate when my husband suggested taking me back to the U.S., even though I know she wanted him and our children close to her.

I met others in Thailand like her. My husband's uncle, who did speak English, was one. Again, he didn't have years of education I have, but he had something more.

Knowledge comes from books and generally from classrooms. Wisdom comes from life. I have worked hard to make sure my children have both.
