When is competition valuable?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 03, 2008:
I am very competitive, but I usually keep it under control because I know if I let it loose my competitve spirit can overwhelm me. (And destroy some relationships along the way.) As a child, I learned some hard lessons about competition and the darker side of that impulse.
So when it comes to other people, I take things slow and easy. I am still very competitve with myself, however. With more determination and greater effort, I know I can do better. Often I push myself. This is valuable, especially in helping me grow as a writer. If my next book were written the same as my very first one was, I would have to forget about writing and think about doing something more practical.
